High quality Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are like “oxygen Magnets” in our cells’ membrane that attracts oxygen from our bloodstream to be transferred into our cells so our cells can properly function. This is an ongoing process. Therefore, we must replace EFAs into our body daily. This is the way nature has us designed.
EFAs come in two overall types, “parent” and “derivative”. Parent EFAs are a type of EFAs that comprise important building blocks — raw materials — for our body. There are two types of Parental EFAs: 1. Parent Omega-3 (Alpha-Linolenic Acid or ALA) and 2. Parent Omega-6 (Linoleic Acid or LA)
Our bodies cannot manufacture these two types of EFAs, hence they are “essential” and we have to obtain them in our food. ALA and LA have complementary functions, meaning they need each other to work properly in our body, so we need both of them at the same time. Our bodies require and directly utilize both of these parent EFAs in their native, unprocessed form.
EFA “derivatives” are EFAs that our body manufactures from our intake of Parent EFAs when our body needs the derived form of the EFAs.
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA(Eicosapentaenoic Acid) are EFAs that are “derived” from the Parent EFA Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA or Omega-3) which is found in fish oil and flaxseed oil and certain other nuts like walnuts. Likewise, GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) are “derived” from the Parent EFA Linoleic Acid ( LA or Omega-6) which is found in certain nuts and seeds like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and evening primrose oil.
The point here is this: We do NOT want to give our bodies the “derived” form of EFAs since these forms are NOT essential. They are not essential because our body will manufacture them “if needed”. That is the main point. We supply the “Parent EFAs” and let our body make what is needed in the form of the derivative EFAs.
Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential fatty acids need to be taken in a ratio of 2 to 3 parts Omega-6 to 1 part of Omega-3. Our bodies need more Omega-6 than we do Omega-3.
SunFlax? is made from “Parent EFAs”, i.e., organic Flaxseed Oil and organic Sunflower seed oil.
And, SunFlax? is in the appropriate ratio of 3 parts Omega-6 to 1 part of Omega-3
Omega-3 (ALA) yields DHA and EPA
Omega-6 (LA) yields GLA and CLA.
Lastly, we do not want to take large amounts of the “derived” EFAs because they create many essential fatty acid “imbalances” in the body because we are attempting to override what our bodies do naturally.
Omega-6 has really gotten bad reviews in the literature. The problem with Omega-6 EFAs is the excessive use of “poor quality” or “rancid” cooking oils. Remember, use only high quality sources of both Omega-6 and Omega-3 EFAs.
